Network testing using Virtual PC software

I am considering using a virtual PC product (VMWare or Connectix) to
test the setup of intranet and internet configurations.

Can someone advise what limitations exist (performance aside) to use
this method to see 1) whether the configuration work; 2) whether the
trial connections are reasonable compared to an alternate
configuration.

Also, I am wondering what do I miss out if I only use the
"workstation" versions of the virtual PC software.

Thanks in advance for your constructive views.
