My company has LAN internet connection, and I want to use my own laptop
connect to the internet. If I use other company's laptop, it is able to
connect to the internet, and I just try to follow the settings, but still
not working.
The environment should be the same, it is not behind the firewall.

Here's what I have done:

1) Local Area Connection Properties | TCP/IP Properties | obtain an IP
address automatically and obtain DNS server address automatically.

2) System properties | properties and set the workgroup

3) ipconfig command and able to get the IP address. But cannot ping other
IP.

any ideas?

Your company may have measures in place to keep foreign computers off of
their network. I would talk to your network administrator before doing
anything like that.

Make sure that your laptop is in the same workgroup at the

actually there is no network administrator here, and the network is very
simple. Yes, my laptop is in the same workgroup as other computers, and no
domain. Thats why I have no idea why it didn't work.

where are you obtaining your DHCP settings from; a
router/firewall? Check your ip settings and see what
your ip address is compared to other machines on the same
network. Same subnet? Can you ping the gateway? Can you
ping beyond the gateway? Sounds like a complete TCP/IP
issue to me

I just discovered an interesting thing: if I use static IP, then its fine.
But once I use dynamic IP, then the internet connection is gone. any ideas??

Here's the network:

T1 line -> hub -> firewall -> switch

all computers (with DHCP setting) will connect through the switch, and my
laptop failed to have internet connection. But for DHCP setting, I dont need
to input any IP (no matter gateway, subnet, or ip address)

However, when I put my laptop connect through the hub, with static IP, then
my laptop is able to have internet connection.

I still have no idea why my laptop failed to have internet connection
through switch. I really can't see what I miss here.

seems pretty likely then the issue is with the firewall.
Most likely the firewall will only allow certain ip addys
in... which means you'll have to set a static IP address
the company will have to determine for you...

But I dont understand how come other computers are working fine?? I already
follow the exact settings as other computers. I think it is a pretty simple
network structure. You mean the firewall only approve connection with
certain MAC address based on the network card?

When I type ipconfig, i get the IP address. This IP address is assigned by
the firewall? or the router?
