I'm using the paid for Avast, which is a p.o.s.

I temporarily need a freebie AV that will not operate "on access". I
don't want it interfering with Avast's on-access capability. Can
someone point one out for me?

I'm bought Avast because I have an older computer and the latest
Kaspersky - which I had used for years and years, would not work with my
XP Pro unless it had service pack 3 in full.

Anyway, I'm getting new box soon and will go back to Kaspersky. In the
meantime I need a half way decent AV to double-check on this p.o.s.
known as Avast.

(All I need is an answer to my question. I'm not going to argue about
Avast.)

Avira AntiVir is available and can easily be taken off 'real-time'
protection by just rt clicking on the taskbar icon and 'unchecking' "AntiVir
Enable".
It will probably go to Enable each time it is booted up.

I think your Multi_AV would be an ideal solution. The OP would have 4 scanners to choose from.

I have a malware scanner that is fairly quick, however you will need
to have an internet connection to use it. The database that I am
currently in the process of updating will eventually contain over 4.57
million entries for malware. You will need the visual basic 6 runtime
package installed along with richtx32.ocx and msinet.ocx. You will
also need winrar, or some other archive utility that supports
decompression of rar archives installed. With decent internet
latency, the scanner can process up to 50GB of data per minute.

50gb per minute? I'm going to have to check this out myself and see what
