My PC got fouled up after I installed Norton Anti-virus (2003). Since
NAV is the most popular AV program (and therefore the "target" of many
uh, virus writers, is this occurrence common?

It's not *uncommon* to see installation issues with any anti-virus
program, particularly programs like NAV which have a large installation
package. Check Symantec's KB for a possible resolution to your problem.
