I have a years subscription to NAV I got before I found AVG freeware.

Which should I use for what? (Which is "better" for what).

Which one for resident, which one for boot, which one for disk scans?

Whatever you decide, DON'T try to run both of them on the same machine.
Its a lot easier to remove AVG than NAV.

There are less genteel descriptions.
Basically, you'll end up with a very bad impression of both of them.

Hi,
My year for McAfee ran out about 6 months ago, so I installed AVG.
The dat files aren't up to date in Mcafee, so should I uninstall it?

Assuming you have no intention of investing more $ in McAfee,
uninstall it.

If you decide you want an additional AV for second opinions of
'suspect' files, there are 'more' good, free AVs available.

I have a2start center, ad-aware, spybot and zone alarm. Is there a
different one that I should have in place of AVG? You'd think that would be
over kill, but I still keep getting JSFortnight back about once a month. I
hear it's hard to get rid of.

None of those (what is "a2start center" - I can't even find it in
Google) are anti-viruses and thus do not do what AVG does, which is
anti-virus. Ad-Aware and SpyBot remove spyware, ZoneAlarm is a
firewall. None of those are AVs. You need all 3 types of software:
AV, firewall, and anti-spyware.

Hi,
I have recently removed Norton Internet Security 2004 incorporating
NAV from my PC and installed free AVG. Which is the better at the task
of virus spotting I do not know but as far as speed of operation the
only one is AVG. Whether this is from clicking on an icon to open the
menus or selecting a file and requesting a virus scan. The actual full
scan takes about one third of the time. If you like to have e-mails
scanned and use an e-mailer other than Microsoft Outlook or Outlook
Express that is also possible with an extra download but it is
something of a fag to configure it - for the download go to
http://www.grisoft.cz/beta/avgemc/avgemc_en.htm

info on a2:

Asquared is 'mainly' an anti-trojan that replaced Ants. I
don't recall Ants as being very effective. I say 'mainly'
because their homepage shows the numbers covered for trojans,
virus, worms, spyware, etc.

They have forum support and just registered 100,000 users. It
appears to be much improved over Ants, or can that many users
be wrong?

The free version only scans and is a 3meg DL.
