My computer won't start up in normal bootup, it will take approx 10-30 mins for it to get to the part where i log in, and when i enter my PW it freezes at loading personal settings.

In safe mode, It will start up and get me into windows, but the startmenu taskbar won't show up and when i try to run my antivirus it does an RPC and counts down from 60 till it shuts off.

This did not start happening till i reinstalled my antivirus and after reinstalling it everything started to mess up. I'm currently waiting for the computer to start so i can delete my antivirus to see if it was corrupted or something of the sort. does this sound like a familiar virus, and how can i go about using a new antivirus on this computer without it crashing.

any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Steve

Greetings Steve,

Yes, it sounds like you have a virus (your AV probably found it, and deleted
it, but an important file)

Here is what I would do :

1. Scan your PC for viruses from a boot CD (boot to CD or floppy, run an AV
over the whole hard drive)

2. DO a REPAIR Install of WindowsXP

Yup,

This is the MSBlaster worm.

Note, you really should have an AV, a Firewall, and some AntiSpyware in
place before connecting to the internet.

For AV I suggest free AVG from Grisoft

For FW, the XP built-in will do
I suggest getting the SP2 RC1 also

For spyware, try these -

AdAware from Lavasoft (Cleaner)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
Install, update, scan weekly

SpyBot Search and Destroy (Cleaner + Blocker)
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=download
Install, update, immunise, scan weekly

Spyware Blaster 3 (Blocker)
http://www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html
Install, update, enable protection 2 types
