Thanks Randy.

Anything special I need to do to use the MVPS HOSTS File on Win 7. Do I
just need to follow the special instructions for Vista or is there something
more.

Also, the same for WHS. Will disabling the DNS Client have any adverse
impact?

The FAQ does not list anything for Windows 7, you would have to contact the
webmaster for more information.

On a stand-alone machine, disabling the DNS Client is recommended.
I can't elaborate more in detail here, again, check with the webmaster.

Regards, enjoy.

I've got both Windows 7 and WHS here, but I'll confess to not using the MVPS
HOSTS file.

I suspect you'd be fine disabling the dns client on the WHS--but you might
want to check WHS console, settings, troubleshooter 1.1 and remote
access--and run the tests before and after to see if anything changes.

(I just ran the RA test and it said it isn't working, so I now have it
repairing. I suspect that all is well--Verizon blocks port 80 here, so the
site is only available on port 443--no problem for me.... the wizard thinks
my router is broken. It isn't!)

Hence the before and after tests!

Okay, it's running on Win 7 (build 7000) with no apparent problems and seems
to be working fine, at least most ads are blocked. Will tackle WHS tonight
after work. More interested in the malware blocking in WHS instead of ads
as WHS is not used for web surfing, but I am running email (Outlook Express)
on WHS so the possibility of a malware infection does exist. Avast for WHS
is also running and I understand it has malware protection built in.

I would hesitate to run the hosts file on a machine which was used as a DNS
server, although there might well be no interaction--but in your case it
seems a reasonable additional precaution--shouldn't hurt anything, and might
help.
