I have SP2 installed, however... I do NOT have any Norton applications, because
they interfered with too many programs that I like. Some peope have no problems
with Norton, and others choose to avoid them like the plague. I'm in the latter
category.

I use a free firewall and other A-V programs.

That was going to be my next question. Seems to me, you have done everything
you can do, to get a clean install [other than uninstalling NAV, which is a
little premature].

I'm not surprised by this, because they have really "bloated up" MMJB this time,
and it is quite possible that you need Windows SP2, for some of the coding in
this version to be handled right.

Mike or Byte, may have other suggestions, but it seems to me, your best bet is
to install SP 2, and junk Norton AV if you have to.
Also if Windows Media Player is designated your "default" player, I'd change
that, before the next installation of MMJB to see if that makes any difference.
And AFTER deleting everything as you have done before... I would *RESTART* my
computer... and the LAST thing I would check before d/l again, is to *make sure*
NAV is DISABLED.
First, I would upgrade to Win SP2 after reading the instructions at MS web site.
And then go for a *clean* install of MMJB 10 again.
Let us know what you think... or are doing.
