hello,
recently xp stopped allowing me to have multiple "my
computer" windows open simultaneously. before i could
just click on the my computer shortcut to have multiple
copies of the window open.
this happened since i set up a network and have shared
certain folders. is there a quick fix to this problem?

thanks!
scott

scott;

Try this:
Start | Settings | Control Panel | Folder Options |
General tab | Browse folders | Check:
Open each folder in it's own window | Apply | OK

Hope this helps. Let us know.

thanks for the quick reply.

i tried that but now any folder that i open will open in a
new window, which gets kind of annoying when i'm looking
for a file 10 folders deep. before that wouldn't happen.

if i have one my cpu window open and click into another
folder, then i can click the my cpu shortcut again and i
get a new window. maybe that's the only way.

There is only one My Computer window at a time. Explorer uses /n switch to force a new window when a window already exists.
But this isn't standard but is typed.

explorer /n,c:\
for instance.

scott;

I only see the two choices. ;-(

Open each folder in the same window
[[Specifies that the contents of each folder open in the same window. To
switch back to the previous folder, click the Back button on the toolbar, or
press BACKSPACE.]]

Open each folder in its own window
[[Specifies that the contents of each folder open in a new window. The
previous folder content still appears in a different window, so you can
switch between the windows.
If you select this option, every folder will open in a new window.
By default, each folder you open appears in the same window and overwrites
the previous window contents. To return to this setting, click Open each
folder in the same window. ]]
