I notice in the msconfig/startup the following files and wondering what they
are and if they can be deleted:
"igfxtray"
"hkcmd"
"agrsmmsg"

The reason I ask is, I downloaded the recent critical update kb834707 and
then computer had to be restarted. However, during the shut down a box popped
up, something about "System Fader" and program that couldn't continue, etc.
The critical update did install (as far as I know), but I don't know what
that pop-up was all about and what program would be running (never happened
before) that couldn't shut down.
Would anyone be able to help me?

Alice;
Look here for descriptions:

You may need to go to the hardware manufacturers website and get the
latest Windows XP drivers.
