I've read numerous posts related to this issue - I've successfully created a
movie in MovieMaker 2.1, and burned to DVD's using Sonic, all thanks to alot
of information I've gotten from various posts here! My problem is that I'd
like to save the MovieMaker file to CD to free up space on my c: drive but it
won't recognize the drive as a recording device. I understand that there's a
known issue with XP sp2, and I followed the instructions on editing the
registry; however when I check the properties on the drive it still doesn't
show the recording tab that I'm supposed to see. My burner is an NEC ND-1100
DVD +R/RW on a Dell Dimension 4500. Is my only option to update firmware on
the burner?

I would hazard a guess that the problem is actually Sonic. I don't use it
myself but I've read other posts about it installing a program similar to
"CD Now" which is a program designed to control your CD player making it
"Drag and Drop" These programs make little sense to anybody running Windows
XP since Windows Explorer already treats CD-R's as drag and drop except for
the burning on the fly feature that really isn't what it says it is.
If Sonic installed something similar to this and it's resident in your
taskbar then either disable it and see if you can drag the file to your CD
drive in Win Explorer or simply USE it to burn the file to CD.

If this isn't the situation please give further information as to how you
are trying to get the file to a CD and why it isn't working.

I will check that out when I'm at home - I know I've been able to save photos
to CD through my Easyshare program and have saved tax files to a CD - however
that may have been before I installed the Sonic program.
As far as how I was trying to save the movie file, I simply opened up the
mm2 program, it automatically opened up the saved project that I'd completed.
I tried to click on "save to CD" but that's when it gives the error message
about the drive not a recording device. - But again, I'll check this out -

Hello,

There is a possibility...there is an entry in the XP registry that can get
screwed up resulting in the problem you describe. I wrote a small program
that will enable you to correct that issue (If it really is your problem)
The program is called FixIt and is available on my website...when you get
to the opening svreen choose the option to go to the OLD WEBSITE and go to
the downloads section.

Start the program and write down the value for the drive....you need that
if you want to go back to it later....using the options set your drive to
the type you believe it should be. Reboot your machine and try it
out.....if all fails simply return the entry to the one first shown.
