Modem not found

As I mentioned the other day, I recently reformatted my laptop disk and
reinstalled Windows 2000, followed by installation of service packs and
all security updates etc.

Yesterday I realized that the modem didn't work.

I therefore installed the modem driver from the CD that came with the
laptop, and the Device Manager now reports the modem as installed and
operational, but when I try and connect I get this:

"Opening Port Error 797: The connection failed because the modem (or
other connecting device) was not found".

Any suggestions?

Thank you.

Sounds like it may be the wrong driver

http://support.microsoft.com/default...b;en-us;317222

Manufacturers occasionally put multiple drivers on cd's to cover various
computer models in the range.

Thanks for the link - I'll follow it up.

Could it still be the wrong driver despite the fact that the Device
Manager reports the modem as fully operational?

I followed the instructions on the above page, but I still got "Opening
Port Error 797" :-(

I then spoke to a guy from http://www.mobile-support.net/ who suggested
I should download and install a newer driver from their website, which I
did, but still no luck :-(

The only other think the support guy could suggest to reinstall Windows
XP, which is the OS the laptop originally came with, but I made a
deliberate decision to install Windows 2000 and I don't like the idea of
having to install Windows XP just to see whether the in-built modem works!

Any other suggestions (apart from forgetting about the internal modem
and using an external PCMIA modem card)?

Thank you.

Ah ... if the laptop came with XP then the CD you have with the drivers on
will also be for XP and you may require alternative drivers for W2K

No, the driver CD has separate directories for XP and W2K, and I
definitely installed the W2K version, and I also tried with the W2K
version from
<http://www.mobile-support.net/product_view.php?size=min&product_qa_id=13&feature_qa_id=238>
- any more ideas?

Thank you.
