Modem not found after Windows updates

I am using windows 2000 with Outlook Express 6.0
After installing recent Windows updates, I now find that my Alcatel
Speedtouch USB broadband modem cannot be found. All lights are extinguished
on the modem.
The updates are as follows
KB889293
KB885835
KB885836
KB873339

I am not sure in which order these were installed. Is this critical?

Both green lights on the modem come on about half way thought the Windows
boot process, but then go off permanently as Windows finally loads.

The modem error states the following:
Error 797 - Opening port. Modem not found.

I can usually get the modem working again by messing around in Control
Panel/Add New Hardware. Not sure exactly what I do to correct the problem,
but the modem magically comes to life again. It appears that Windows has to
search for this particualr piece of hardware every time Windows is started.

Can anyone help please?
I would very much appreciate an answer to this irritating problem.

Thanks in advance.

V.G.
