Modem log error message

When looking at my modem log there is a message that "the event timed out
waiting for a response from the modem--retrying"

I am using the XP Professional built in drivers for the modem. Previously,
when I tried to use the USR unsigned drivers from the website, I had trouble
connecting to the Internet (I use dial up 56k connection).

Does anyone know how to correct the above problem, or if it is even a
problem?
