I'm having some strange problems that only seem to
afflict my administrator account. I have an
Dell Inspiron 8000 laptop with Win2K, and the 3com combo
ethernet/modem. I created modem entry under
Network-and-Dialup-Connections. I created it as
administrator, and it works fine so long as I use it
from an administrator account (I created it for all
users). If I use it from a nonadministrator account,
it works fine, but when the connection exceeds 6
minutes, the line freezes. It doesn't disconnect, but
not one byte will be received. I have to disconnect
and reconnect.
This only seemed to afflict one phone number (I use
various dialup entries for various numbers). I thought
the created connection must have become corrupt, so I
created another one from the administrator account.
Again, it works fine from the administrator account.
However, it *mostly* doesn't work at all from the
nonadministrator account. It looks like it works fine,
since I get the message that I'm being registered on
the network. But when I try to browse to Google, the
browser can't connect. Occassionally, it will work
(meaning that some of the times I try dialup, the
browser works), but not for most of the tries.
I tried creating a connection as nonadministrator.
Same parameters. But I don't even get as far as seeing
that I'm being registered on the network. I only get a
TCP/IP error 735 (the requested address is rejected by
the server).
I realize that it's hard to say definitely what is
wrong because there are so many modem parameters. But
why would the flaky connectivity only affect the
nonadministrator account? That might give a hint as to
what is wrong.
Thanks.
