Missing registry entry for imaging devices - pls could someone create a reg file

I recently installed the driver for my new Epson perfection scanner
and when I plugged the scanner in, got the message:

Cannot install this hardware.
There was a problem during the installation of this device.
The required section was not found in the INF.

The problem and part of the solution is described at http://tinyurl.com/2erh8g

In short, somehow I've lost the entry in the registry for imaging
devices. I need a key in:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
={6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}, which is a GUID for imaging
devices.

Unfortunately, the poster at http://tinyurl.com/2erh8g doesn't say
what the reg file entries should be in order to recreate this key.
Please can someone post this? I presume it should just be a metter of
exporting the key from a working machiine, opening the reg file in
notepad and pasting the contents into a reply here?

Dave

Hi Dave...

Were it only that simple...

WinXP Pro/Epson 3200 photo your {6DD..} line appears 27 times.
(without duplication, and some have arguments following the line)

I can't help wondering if it wouldn't be easier for you to simply
un-install, then delete everything from your twain 32 directory,
and start over.

Another thought, if I may? The Epson software I got on CD with
my scanner is nothing at all like the upgrade available (free)
from Epson's site, so it might be worth your time to first grab
the upgraded software (much much better) Make sure you get the
correct OS version.

Take care.

Ken

Oh dear - but it *was* that simple for the poster at http://tinyurl.com/2erh8g
so if anyone else reading this has just one key called
{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F} in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM
\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class then I would be grateful if they
could export it and post the contents of the resulting reg file.

Not sure how to uninstall and reinstall the Twain driver? I can't see
it in Device Manager. Please could you step me through the process?

Done. Didn't help with my problem, but I'm sure you're right that
it'll be a better driver once I can get it working.

Hi Dave...

Durn, I tell the girls that I'm 19, but I'm really an old
and stroke damaged guy, so please try to forgive me.

Just feebly remembered how to get the results you're describing,
and betcha know what's happened.

You MUST install with the scanner disconnected from your machine!
Turn it off, unplug the usb or fireware. Uninstall what you can
of Epson's stuff. Get rid of the twain stuff by simply deleting
everything in your twain 32 directory. Disable any registry
protecting tools you're using.

Then re-install.

Then hook up and turn on the scanner, and I betcha a (Canadian) dollar
to a donut that it works.

Take care.

Ken

I never install with the scanner plugged in. And deleting the twain
directory and uninstalling and reinstalling made no difference. And
the poster at http://tinyurl.com/2erh8g did solve exactly same problem
I have by exporting the key from another machine. Please could we try
that? It can't possibly do any harm and it might solve my problem. It
isn't an Epson key - all imaging devices by all manufacturers have to
use it and it is part of the defult XP installation. Please could you
try exporting HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}, and opening the resulting reg
file in notepad, and pasting its contents into a reply here? If it
contains any referrences to Epson I can just delete those at my end.

Hi Dave...

There are three of them where you're looking; I suspect that this one
is the most likely. For future ref let's call this (my fname) Dave3

If you like I'll be happy to email you directly the .reg's.

Got it working? Was thinking of getting Epson perfection V100. Is
this your model, if so, what's it like?
Thanks, regards, dnw.

Thanks, Ken, that fixed it. In case anyone else should have the
problem in the future, the reg file only needs to contain the
following:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-08002BE2092F}]
"Class"="Image"
@="Imaging devices"
"Installer32"="sti_ci.dll,ClassInstall"
"TroubleShooter-0"="hcp://help/tshoot/tsInputDev.htm"
"Icon"="0"

If someone who is not familar with reg files should have the problem,
the procedure is as follows:

1) Create a text file in Notepad, paste in the above text, save and
close.

2) In Windows Explorer rename the extention from .txt to .reg.

3) Double-click on the newly created reg file to add the key to your
registry.

4) Restart Windows.

Thanks again Ken.

Dave
