Has anyone downloaded Microsoft Security Essentials released today free
of charge? It provides real-time protection for your home PC and
guards against viruses, spyware, and other malicious software.. I have
just downloaded but can't install yet because I have AVAST running on
this system.

You need to unimstall Avast then install MSE

This from MSE:

"Uninstalling existing antivirus or antispyware programs before installing
Microsoft Security Essentials. If you use more than one antivirus or
antispyware program at the same time, your computer may experience decreased
performance, become unstable, or restart unexpectedly. Before you install
Microsoft Security Essentials, you should disable or uninstall other
security-related programs."

I too run Avast! As far as I recall it has always been advised not to run
two AV programmes at the same time.

MSE automatically disables Windows Defender (if you don't uninstall it
first).

I assume it would be OK to keep the FREE versions of Malwarebytes and
Superantispyware as these do not have "Real Time" scanning.

The thing that bothers me is the word "suite". Norton, McAfee, Trend Micro
etc. have "suites" that want to take over your computer and be all things to
all men.

Think I'll wait for some feedback before trying it.

Correct. They can interfere with each other.

Yes.

I am almost always against suites of any type--whether software,
office, or anything else. I want to choose what I think is the best
program of each type, not what the vendor of a suite chooses and puts
together.

As stated the "suite" tag puts me off a bit. However, I think that this time
I will go against my instincts and give it a try.

The reasons for this are:

Although the FREE versions of Malwarebytes and Superantispyware are very
good, as they do not have "real time" scanning/detection, they are only
useful at removing threats "after the event" (although I will keep both to
run independent scans).

Unlike Windows Defender, which only had database updates every few days, MSE
automatically updates itself three times a day.

Although I found AV programmes such as Avast! and AVG very good, logic
suggests that MS has many more resources (and many more reasons) to make
sure that its database of potential malware is fully updated.

It would be interesting to know where the likes of Avast! and AVG get their
information about new viruses/threats. I have to assume that much of it
comes from MS research, or am I wrong?

I would assume this logic (keeping installed to run independent scans)
would also apply to keeping Avira's AntiVir installed (with the real-
time Guard option turned off)? Although, of late, the updating of
this AV has become problematic, bringing it's useful effectiveness in
to question. As a result, it has made me more prone to giving MSE a
try.

I seem to recall the MSE promo email mentioned that MSE was a
companion for Windows Defender. Is that how others understood it? If
so, I'll probably install WD as well.

No, MSE will turn off Windows Defender when you install it.

If you have Windows Defender installed when you install MSE, then the
MSE installer would disable Windows Defender. So basically if you
install MSE you really don't need to install Windows Defender.

Thanks for clearing that up Roy. Any 'known', i.e. published
incompatibilities with other apps, security or otherwise, that came
out of the beta trial?

All of these links have been posted MANY times by Butts:

http://www.pcbutts1.XXX/rlk/rlk.htm Exposed to Kids ,
http://www.pcbutts1.XXX/license.htm Exposed to Kids ,
http://www.pcbutts1.XXX/downloads/max.htm Exposed to Kids ,
http://www.pcbutts1.XXX/downloads/mpv.htm Exposed to Kids ,

http://www.pcbutts1.XXX/Loutheasshole.htm REMOVED ,
http://www.pcbutts1.XXX/downloads/bughunters.htm Exposed to Kids ...

I replaced COM with XXX so that the links would not work. All of those
pages contained very nasty porn that butts created and then posted about
the various people each time he was exposed as pirating others works.

You would find these if you had a ounce of integrity and actually looked
for his history.
