When opening Word it takes a long time then when it opens it runs a virus
scan and takes about 15 minutes to open file. Do you have any suggestions?

You could try removing the software and re-installing it; it may help.

No, Worddoesn't run a virus scan. Your anti virus program does. Disable its
Office scanning function.

What's the exact message you see? Do you use Norton AV?

If you use Norton, then go to Norton Options and disable the Office Plug-in.
The option may be named something along the lines of "Scan Office
documents".

If you aren't using Norton then please post back with the answer to my first
question. It could be you have an old add-in type that is causing the issue.

There are some circumstances in which Word will tell you it's running a
virus scan (even though it's not actually running one) and it has nothing to
do with your virus scanner. They tie into the macro virus scanning engine in
order to scan a few old add-in types (.wll) for macros.
