Is there a facility in Windows XP Professional to disable MSN messenger from
running on a computer. Thanks for any advice

Yes.

Uninstall followed by Limited user account for person you don't want
using the application.

Soory my fault I was a little vague, people are bringing msn in on usb drives
therefore even if I uninstall it it still runs are there any other
alternatives??

You may want to block Windows Messenger too, since it allows messenging
with the same user base.

and look for similar measures to use with MSN messenger.

Or you could try blocking the required ports with a router and/or
software firewall using the information in:

Look for port numbers at the bottom of the "More Information" section.

But again, the users may be able to counteract if thier OS login type
and group policies allow them to reverse your settings. The availability
of the added reatures in the XP Pro will be a help in that regard.
Software firewalls might have their own systems for controling who can
authuorize port access. Some firewalls can block internet access for
individual local applications too.

The support staff over at MSN might respond to an inquiry.

If you don't need USB ports for other purposes you could disable them.

There MAY be some people who can offer more help in the
microsoft.public.msn.messenger group.

Hi,

You have to use the standard GPO stuff to block MSN Messenger at the Windows level, there are
no exclusive GPOs for MSN Messenger (like Windows Messenger). So, basically you block
msnmsgr.exe from running -- of course one could just rename it or simply use a different
client entirely.

Blocking ports won't work, Messenger can use port 80, unless you want to block the whole web.

Simply blocking messenger.hotmail.com at the connection source is far easier and eliminates
third-party clients as well. Also remember to do webmessenger.msn.com if one wishes to block
Web Messenger too.
