Messenger contacts do not appear on line

Windows XP, Media Edition, fully updated.

I had to change my .Net passport which affected my Messenger contact list.
I
deleted each contact and added them again using my new passport info. I
then had each contact delete me from their list and add me back. All was
well for six weeks until yesterday when contacts that I knew to be on line
are appearing as off line. I am also appearing to be off line to them when
I am on line.

I have not added nor removed software that could be a player. I removed and
reinstalled Windows Messenger (4.7)--same problem exists. I used Google to
check the newsgroup archives and found no help. I did not find anything in
the MS KB. Nothing helpful is in the Messenger troubleshooter in Help.
While preparing this message, I started my laptop which has the same
Messenger account. The desktop PC displays the message about logging off
because I signed in at a different location but the laptop also does not
show anyone to be on line. I am starting to suspect that the problem is not
with my computer but with my account.

Any ideas?

Added note: I deleted a contact (my wife) and added her back and after a
couple of minutes, she showed up as being on line. It appears this confirms
something is wrong with my account--any ideas on what? I will not like
having to delete and add contacts continually.

Greetings Ron,

You're not the only one reporting this happening this week. Looking into it.

Then what happend? I have the same problems, only mine appeared after an
upgrade from Messenger 6.2 to Messenger 7.5 - and my contacts does not
re-appear as online when i remove and re-add them...

A "problem solver" would be highly appreciated... :-)
