Could someone explain to me how the size of the mdb file is determined by
access?

What I believe to be my front end is showing a size of 17 MB after
compacting

Does the linked tables have anything to do with the size?

I have serveral very large tables linked to this project but this mdb only
has about 20 queries, 20 forms, 5 very small tables, 6 reports, and a couple
of modules within the mdb itself.

17Mb sounds ridiculous on the face of it.

Create an empty database and import everything from the current db.
Compact, compile and see what you get then.
