I am building out the BCM for my firm, and in the process have heard rumor
that you can only add 40 customized user-defined fields to a database. Can
anyone confirm that is the case? I don't want to put in all this time to
create it and then have to go back and reduce our defined fields or make
choices between them.

The answer is Yes. 40 fields for Account, another 40 for Contact, another
40 for Business Project, and another 40 for Opportunity.
