My computer blinked and changed color settings suddenly..accidentally.
The color was abnormally light and then very dark I adjusted the colorin
settings to 16 bits true color,32 and then just 16...all yeid the same
results. The color is so light I cant's tell which email is new or has been
read.

When I adjust to what's left...256 colors it's very dark but Ican at least
see the emails and other print that was too light before while online.I did
click onto "advanced" and there was a kind of scale that I could adjust those
colors to gradations that were more normal. For some odd reason that feature
disapeared. I think accidentally deleted,and so Ican only rely on the other
colors which are not working.
Offline my Desktop is too dark to tolerate. It seems like I need to change
to 256 to see online and then back to 16 when I'm ofline . It has been over a
month of this.
In the past when the computer hiccuped like that after I turned it off it
naturally defaulted to its normal settings but not with this.

Sounds like the graphics adapter and or monitor has failed.

Thank you for clarifying the origin of the failure or least the
possibilities. Is this something I,a non-expert, can fix on my own with more
specific feedback from others on re-adjusting or does it need repair from a
professional and if so how extensive...?

First you'll need to determine what (if anything) has failed. What I
suggested is just one possibility. Try swapping with known good components.
Check Event Viewer and Device Manager for errors and or non-starting
devices. Components are easily changed in most desktops. In the case of
component failure in a laptop you may need to send it to the manufacturer.
