Lost User Created Desktop icons

How do I restore User Created Desktop icons. Half of
them were removed due to (I guess) from an aborted
shutdown. I have review the technical news artical to
restore icons (properties/ desktop / customize desktop /
general) but appears to me that they are limited to MS
created shortcuts)
