Recently while restarting my computer I received a Windows message that
certain boot-up files were damaged and would I like Windows to fix them. I
of course said yes.

Thereafter two problems have persisted.

1. There is no audio, not even the llittle speaker icon at the bottom of
the screen. The computer has onChip audio built into the motherboard and it
is enabled in BIOS. I would install a PCI audio card, except for the second
problem that occured.
2. The CD-ROM will not read any disc other than the Windows 2000
installation disc. It simply displays the following message whenever the
CD-ROM is accessed.

"The disc in Drive E is not formatted ! Would you like to format it now?"

Of course the disc is formatted as it works in my other computer. I have
already changed the CD-ROM drive to no avail.

I would welcome any suggestions as to how to defeat the gremlins.

Kind regards

Paul
