Logitech headset microphone not working

I purchased a Logitech headset microphone for online
gaming. It has 2 mini plugs-1 pink(mic) and 1 black(line
in) which are connected to the appropriate jacks on my
computer (running Windows XP Professional). I get sound
through the earphones but the mic doesn't seem to pick up
sound. I just get a flat line when using Sound Recorder
as a test. I've gone through all the sound and microphone
control panels trying various configurations but nothing
seems to work. Yes, all mic volume sliders are at least
halfway up and all mute boxes are unchecked. I also have
a 5.1 channel speaker system (Creative Inspire 5400)
because my motherboard (ASUS A7N8X) supports surround
sound. As such, I have the 5.1 option chosen in speaker
settings. Under "Advanced" options in Master Volume, only
the box for "Rear speakers connected to line in" is
checked. I did this because it maintains sound out to the
center channel speaker and subwoofer so I don't have to
experience games exclusively through headphones. If I
have to give that up to get the mic working though, I
will. Just advise as to what I should do. Thanks.

Try to look at settings in control panel, in sound there is a selection
of your device.
