I am using Windows Live Mail under Vista. Recently, opening the second
attachment (of any file type), including the same attachment already read,
causes the Live Mail to close. How do i fix this?

I bet you are using Norton antivirus. If so, that is a known issue caused by a
recent update to Norton antivirus. There may be a newer update that corrects
the problem, so first try updating Norton. If no joy, uninstall and follow up with their
debris removal tool:
