Limited User cannot use MS Word

I have XP running. I have a regular user and a limited user (for the kids).
When logged on (regardless of the only log on or via fast switching) the
limited user cannot use Word. It appears that it is going to install or
re-install (even though it is already installed), then Word will open but so
does an error message which says "...no longer functioning properly. Run
Setup & Repair ". I tried that to no avail. I even uninstalled MS Office
and completely reinstalled it, also to no avail. Word is NOT open under the
regular user when I am trying all of this.

Running: XP Pro Sp2 (all updates)
MS Word 2002 SP3

I need Word for the kids to use for homework and I do not want to have them
logged on as a full user!

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Hi Wes:

No, it did not help. Firstly, I am presuming that I am making (attempting
to) these changes whilst logged in as a full user. Actually, it did not seem
to matter much anyway.

I tried the cut & paste of short cuts as listed in suggestion 1 in the
document http://www.rickrogers.org/xpsware.htm. This did not help.

I tried suggestion 2) (Right click, Properties/Advanced) and interestingly,
in neither the full user nor the limited user were the options such as "run
with different credentials in bold but rather were in grayout. This applies
to all MS Office applications though not other applications.

I tried suggestion 3) giving the limited user the ability to read, execute
and write in the Program Files folders. No luck.

Now, one other interesting thing I just found out from my oldest daughter.
She went to use MS Word signed on as the limited user for the first time
after it was set up and it asked her to provide some information first such
as the Name and initials. I was not around so she just typed in her name
like they ask at school. (She could not remember exactly what the window was
titled.) However now when I run an Office programme, and then check
Help/About, in the full user mode, it is in my name (as it should be). When
I check an Office programme whilst logged in as a Limited user then
Help/About, it lists the information she typed in (her name & initials). The
product id for both is the same. Could this be causing the problem?

One note, she did this entry of her name and initials before I uninstalled
MS Office and reinstalled it. (see original posting) Somehow that particular
information was not deleted in the uninstall and showed up again once I had
reinstalled it.

Any other suggestions? I don't mind uninstalling and reinstalling again,
but I need to know how to ensure that all settings are deleted. Then I can
start over.

Thanks.

Nice document though from rickrogers.org! I need things simple. :-)

You can also use Run As. Right click winword.exe or whatever MS Word
shortcut your trying to use. Run As should be right below Open.

If Run As is grayed out, press and hold down the SHIFT key while you
right-click the program icon and then click Run as.

If Run as fails, the Secondary Logon service may not be running. This may
also apply for the Advanced Properties, I do not know for sure.

Minimally, where the converse (that you are now wrestling with) does
not work, you might try installing your version of Word (and maybe the
entire MS Office ensemble) directly under the "limited user" account,
which you might possibly then find yourself able to access from a
regular user account. (I don't guarantee this as a bulletproof
solution.)

Hi: Shift + Right Click provides Run As and I can sign on as me whilst
logged on as the limited user and Word works just fine. However, one must do
this each time one wishes to open Word whilst logged on as the limited user.
I did not want to have to run over to the computer each time one of the kids
needs to use Word to do homework and Run As me.

Anything more permanent?

Thanks
Vela

Hello Rick:

I uninstalled MS Office and downloaded and installed the Office Cleanup
Tool. However, when it gives me a list of things that I can remove, I do not
recognize most of them and the ones I do are not programmes having anything
to do with MS Office. I am concerned about deleting something I should not
be deleting.

The ??? list is comprised of
CCHelp, CCServe
A lot of ESS files of various types
3 HLP files
J2SE
KSU
Notifier
OfotoXmi
OTtBP files
PCDLNCH
SFR SFR2
VCamCen
VPrintol
Web Fldrs XP

I know not everything uninstalled since there are still some icons on the
Start/Programs/Microsoft Applications even though those links doe not work.

I am not sure what to do next.

Thanks,
Vela
