Lexmark Optra e312 paper feed problem--HELP, please!

I have a Lexmark Optra E312 that I'm using with a mac.

For months now, it has often (I'd say 50% of the time) pulled more than
than a single sheet of paper when printing--it is not uncommon for it to
grab three or four sheets at a time, sometimes more. Jams are frequent
and more paper is wasted than printed. I have tried several weights and
textures of paper--it seems to make no difference what paper is used. I
have recently replaced the toner cartridge--also, no difference. Any
suggestions as to how to solve this will be very welcome.

I've got the same printer and it has been a constant source of multiple
feeds since the very first time I used it. Lexmark was no help at all. They
offered to send me a refurbed (a.k.a. high mileage) printer in exchange for
my brand new one, but they had no assurances that the refurbed one would
feed any better. My way of getting around this problem is two fold. #1 I use
my Canon inkjets whenever possible. #2 If the E312 is required, then I
adjust the paper guides as tightly as possible. This helps somewhat to
restrict the additional sheets from being sucked into the printer. It
doesn't eliminate the problem, but it does help a little. The only other
thing to do is actually hold onto the paper as it's being fed and keep the
other sheets from feeding in.

Thanks for your post, depressing though it is. Mine actually worked
fairly well for the first few months, then the multiple feed issue
became more and more frequent to the point where it is constant now.
