Legacy Plug and Pray

I have an HP Laserjet 5 printer that is directly connected
to the LPT1 port on a Dell Dimension PC. It will not
print unless the "Legacy Plug and Play" option is checked
for the LPT port. This works until you reboot, then the
option has to be toggled (checked off and then back on
again). I have already tried setting the port in BIOS to
PS/2, EPP, and ECP. Each of these settings do the same
thing. Also, the printer worked flawlessly when it was
connected to PC running Windows 98 with the same cable.
Any suggestions?
