help! i've recently bought an ipod and have attempted to download itunes 8
from the apple website. this was done without drama but then when i try to
open it to install i tunes the following msg comes up:"this windows package
cannot be installed by the windows installer service. you must install a
windows service package that contains a newer version of the windows
installer service." my notebook computer runs windows xp professional. does
anyone know how i can fix this - would an earlier version of i tunes be the
way to go? thanks!

The iTunes setup package internally contains a number of .msi modules.
Apparently, your PC does not have the Microsoft Install package 3.1
You need to update your MSI software components before installing
the latest iTunes.
*Also be careful as the iTunes package installs way more than just
iTunes - you'll get File sharing, QuickTime, Apple Updater.....
The redistributable Installer 3.1 is found here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

You might want to use http://Update.Microsoft.Com to get your PC
using the latest update mechanism and patches.

great, thanks so much.
i downloaded the 3.1 package and it began to installl but then a message
saying my computer needed windows xp sp2 or newer to run itunes came up. so
i'm assuming i either need to download an earlier itunes version or can my
windows xp professional be upgraded with downloads or otherwise?

Install SP3 or at least SP2 and you may then be able to install iTunes 8.0.

Obviously about two years worth of updates from Microsoft need
to be downloaded. Jeez...some people.
