As a test, I made a compressed backup of my system drive - 320 gig IDE
drive, and then restored that image to a different 320 gig SATA drive.
As I understand it, with DriveImage XML you have to restore to a drive
the same size or larger than the one you imaged.

According to DrimeImage XML the image was created successfully but
after disconnecting the original C drive and leaving only the
supposedly clone SATA drive in the system, I can't get the system to
boot from that drive - get a system disk error message.

Any insights as to why?

Is it possible that you only backed up the C partition and not the C
drive? If you specified the partition rather than the drive you
probably need to write a boot sector to your cloned drive.

I don't think so, going through the screens, it doesn't seem to give
an option to back up only the partition - it's pretty straightforward
- copy this drive to this folder. It's supposed to make a clone of
whatever is on the drive.

Just to be sure, how would I verify that the boot sector is there?

If it was me, I'd boot from a Windows recovery CD and run fixboot or
fixmbr. I always forget which is the right one.

Yeah. It's not in the same place on the drive cable as the one you backed
up, drive letter is different. The drive ID number might affect it too but
I don't think so.

Turns out I had to make the partition "active" in disk manager. It
would be great if they made prominent mention that you're supposed to
do this.
