Installing XP externally

I am fixing a computer for a friend. The problem lies in that their pc is so old it doesn't boot usb drivers, and therefore the mouse and keyboard that I have to use won't be read by their system. I have an enclosure, so I have it hooked to my system.

The question is this. Is there a way I can install XP on it externally and plug their hard drive back into their computer without any additional problems? I'd really like to stay away from going way out of my way to find a PS/2 keyboard if I can avoid it.

Any answers and quick responses are welcome. I've tried looking up in various different forums, but nobody seems to be in the same predicament that I'm in. Thanks!
