When installing a thumb drive on system with windows XP pro, OS assigns the
next drive letter after the last physical storage device. It does this even
if the next drive letter is already in use as a mapped network drive.. For
Example, the CD is Drive D, and Drive E is mapped to a network Share, OS
Still assigns the Jump Drive Drive E.

Currently , the only fix we have found is to re-map the network to a
different drive letter, reboot the system and re-install the Jump Drive. Is
there a fix to make XP recognize the fact that the Drive is already mapped
and move on to the next available Non-Mapped drive?

I just leave a gap of drive letters after the phyiscal harddrives and
CD/DVD players and mapped drives.

CD/DVD players, I put at the end of the alphabet. Network Drives in the
middle. That way, removable drives, like USB drives, MP3 players,
camera memory, and such, don't screw around with the way my more
permanent drives are arranged.

By mapping Network drives starting with Z and working down to A as
recommended will avoid this problem.
