I did not see a newsgroup for Windows 7, so here goes:

I am currently running XP SP3. I have an opportunity to obtain Windows 7 as
a full install version, not an upgrade. If I do a full scale install of
Windows 7 on my XP machine, what can I do with my many applications installed
under XP? can those migrate over to Windows 7? do I need to reinstall
everything?

You will need to have a backup copy of all your stuff and install the
applications after the Windows 7 clean installation (you cannot upgrade
Windows XP to Windows 7 in place.)

Windows XP can't be upgraded to Windows 7. You need to do a clean
install (which, in Windows 7, is called a custom install) or dual boot.

You would be well-advised to run the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor:

There is no newsgroup for Windows 7 -- only web forums.

Slight correction: there is no *Microsoft* newsgroup for Windows 7.
There *is* alt.windows7.general, although not all news servers carry
it yet.
