Is there a software solution out there that will allow me to back up or
exchange a set of files from my laptop to my home PC based upon them being
recognised as chaged since the last back up took place?

I want it to keep the directory structure and retain the explorer view so
this rules out the back up solution that comes with the System Accessories
with XP.

Any help would be appreciated.

What prevents you from just copying the files from your laptop back to the
desktop en masse? The files that have changed will overwrite the originals,
and the ones that haven't changed will also be overwritten, but what
difference will that make?

Use Programs -> Accessories -> Synchronize. It allows to synchronize shared
folders on another computer etc.
