How will an increase in memory increase performance?

Because if your applications need to use more RAM than you have, the OS
will swap data back and forth to the hard disk.
RAM = Fast
Hard Disk = Slow

Ignoring other stuff like disk cache's, once you have enough RAM,
sticking more in won't then speed it up anymore.

For any computer that is.

It depends on from what amount of RAM to what amount of RAM you are
increasing it, and what OS you are using. Give some details next time.

"Enough RAM" will vary from system to system.

It is possible to run programs from a RAM Drive with sufficient memory.
