can I import to mm from an sd card or do I need to hook up my digital camera?

Depends on what media you are importing. Jpegs may work, any video file
other than wmv won't. Regardless on whether it is a card or camera.

so ASF or WAV file format won't work?

wav will, it's a windows audio file, asf, depends on what it is, as asf is
just a container, so if it contains wmv/wma/wav on their own then should be
fine, if it contains a selection of files like images/text/animation etc
then possibly no..
