It has taken almost two weeks of working with microsoft tech support and
multiple phone calls and chats on my free help pass and since it was their
problem I got it back.. but all to find out that The developers at microsoft
have deleted the options on the search button on purpose. They might or might
not put them back the way that it was for the finished version of IE 7. But
for now we can con sider them gone unless you out there want hem back or
really raise a fuss with how it is now, Because I hate having to get a
seperate toolbar just to get done what one button did instead of going to
three different sites. I had it all on one button and could switch on the
options that I used, So I told the techs At microsoft that I for one thought
that It was ahorrible idea and that someone had better pass it along. And
they told me to tell my opinion in here as well. So I am. If you don't like
the changes join me in emailing microsoft in telling the development team
about what you think and if you can tell those in the Foriegn message boards
as well, I can't exactluy do that. I got told that they "REALLY" do "listen "
to customer wants and opinions, I kinda chuckled at the tech for that and
warned them that they might want to cut back on the optimism but who knows;
it might just work.

You can get them back, but, it is a series of steps in the Search functions,
and they don't last but maybe the day, then you have to do the same thing
again the next time. But, you *can* get them back. I've done it, and so

The other thread is getting pretty long, much of it is my doing. Jan, I
still am not able to customize search assistant the way I could before. I
don't know if I missed a step somewhere or not. I see search assistant in
the list, but am not able to choose which search agents to use. Before when
I chose search assistant, I was presented with a page to select which search
agents to use. I could pick as many as I wanted and even select the order
they were in.
That was where I found the next button handy.
I would type in my search criteria, then say if I had yahoo as the first
agent on my list, it would show all of the findings from the search in the
pane, clicking next at the top of the search pane would show the findings
from the next search agent on my chosen agents.
Now I can only use one search agent at a time regardless of what option I
choose. So I am having to type the search words for each agent.
I know I am probably not explaining this very well. I hope you can make
some sense of it.

I am sure that Misskitty27 has it correct. I am also sure they have changed
things at their end, and more than likely that is what causes the loading
message that we sometimes see.

How do I send a email to Microsoft and make sure it gets to the correct
people?

built-in search box.

Agreed, but a similar use case is supported by the search box. You can
switch to different search providers without entering you query again.

Could you point out where this search box is located, or perhaps describe
it? I'm not seeing anything that allows you to make any selections on my
end when the regular Search feature is not fully working, which I can make
it do by going through the steps I outlined before, to make the changes I
want to make, but, when it gets changed again I see nothing to provide any
selections. There is a window to enter the search information, and a go
button, that is all. I am just curious as to know if I am missing something
here.

This thread started to get a bit confusing so I want to clearify what I mean
by search button and search box.

IE6
had a search button in its standard toolbar which opened an explorer
side-bar similar to the history or favorites side-bar. From there it was
possible to perform searches in different search engines. The list of search
engines was even configurable to some extent. The result of the search was
either displayed in the narrow side-bar or in the main browser window. The
Next button allowed you to perform the current search in the next search
engine.

I have figured out that the Next button does not work any more in IE6.
Probably that was the reason for the initial post.

IE7
has replaced that feature known as Search Assistant with a separate search
box that is displayed next to the address bar. Obviously, the IE team was
inspired by the Mozilla Firefox browser which has a similar search box. The
search box allows you to switch between different search providers by
clicking on the drop-down arrow. By doing so, you can perform the same
search in different search engines.

Yes, that is what we have all been seeing and understand, I believe. I can
be reset to work as it should going through the Start>Search>Change
Preferences steps that I outlined in the other thread. Although, it does not
stay that way long.

Thanks for the update, Viktor. While this may be all well and good for IE7
where there is something that has been added in it's place, I do not see the
reasoning to suddenly remove that feature from the IE6, especially, without
any notification to Users for those who use IE6, so that they, and we here
in the trenches, would not have spent days and endless hours of research
and troubleshooting trying to find our what the problem was, or how to
correct it, when MS had just simply removed it. Just kinda chars my toast a
tidge. :-)

Hello, All.

I am SO happy to have found this THREAD!! I have been working for a MONTH
to get my "Search Assistant" functions back to how they used to be, only to
find out that it's a MICROSOFT problem, in that they redacted the Search
Assistant. I would be very happy to email them to let them know how UNHAPPY
I am with this. Do you have an email address, Misskitty27, that I could
write to and voice my opinion?
