how to identify an unknown file

I have a file with extensión .pdf. I can't open it. I probed with
another extensión as zip, rar, ace, avi, mpg, doc, etc.

There are any tool to see what this file contain?

Its an Adobe Acrobat "Portable Document Format" file.

The Portable Document Format (*.pdf) is a proprietary Adobe file
format. Do you have either Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Acrobat Reader
installed? The free Reader can be obtained at www.adobe.com.
