If Windows 2000 does not support Multithreading it never will. They are not going to invest time and manpower in an Op sys that has reached the end of its lifetime. Do you expect Microsoft to do any more work on Windows 3.11 MS-DOS Windows NT4 Windows 95\98\ME? No.
I agree with you Windows XP does seem to be a hog. Can you try Windows 2003? But I have only noticed XP to be a hog in older systems. Systems tha come with XP I do not notice it.
