I found one of these on the street some time ago. It has no cables and
I have been undecided about what to do with it. Now I'm thinking of
scavenging parts from it, including hopefully a CCD chip if it has one.
I think it is best if I know as much as possible about the innards of
the device. Does someone know where I can get a detailed schematic and
service manual for free online?

You can scrap it out if you want to, but chances are that the device
would work and the carts are refillable. A cord and USB can be had at
some dollar stores. It's passing strange that you could be thinking of
harvesting a CCD and can't figure out where to find a ubiquitous cord
and cable. if you were standing here I could reach over and give you
an arm full from my junk box.

Welcome to my world.

By the way, I didn't say I couldn't figure out where to get the cord and
cable. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do with the printer. Even if I got it
working, I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with the expense of getting cartridges
for it. Also, this particular model isn't supported with drivers on the Linux
system I'm using and I'm not ready to upgrade the Linux version.

Now, returning to my original question, if I were to follow your suggestion
and use the printer as a printer instead of as a source for a free CCD chip
(and *does* it have a CCD chip?), then I have to find some other source
for a free CCD chip and at the moment I don't have one. I see discarded
printers all the time, but I have never found a discarded digital camera
or a discarded optical scanner.

Well, I can identify somewhat.
I can't pass something up at the curb that looks like it might have
potential down the road.
If the printer didn't even have carts to start with, I'd be going in
the direction of parting it out as well.
