I have bought a HP 5550 to replace my HP 5160 which is nearly worn
out.

I had a duplex unit instaled in the 5160 which also fits the 5550, as
do cartridges and ink refills.

When I installed the duplex unit in the 5550 it was not recognised and
I had to got into the setup and tell it the duplex unit was installed,

The only problem is that when I print both sides using the duplex unit
the second page is printed upside down.

I have been thru all the settings that I can find and nothing seems to
correct the problem.

Does anyone have any idea what the problem may be, or any setting to
correct it.

The only thing I could think of was the fact that the duplex was was
recognised when installed.

Any Ideas
Thanks

Are you using Vista? The HP Vista drivers for many printers have a major
bug with the duplexer. It also affects the OfficeJet 7300/7400 series.
There is an unofficial file that fixes that bug, but there are still
issues with the way the top and bottom margin is handled with some
programs.

Yes it is Vista. The 5160 duplexer works ok in Vista but 5550 does
not.

We have the other problem that you cannot clean the cartridge or find
out how much ink is left in Vista.

Where do I get the unofficial file fix

Thanks

You can send an email to alanmo, and he is at microsoft.com. Let him
know the basic issue, and what model printer. He will send the updated
file and instructions. You will need to know a bit about working from a
command prompt (you stop the spooler, rename the old file, copy over the
new file, delete a few automatically generated files, then restart the
spooler.)
