HP 4050 toner gauge incorrect

I hope someone can help me with this problem. The printer
configuration page shows that it is half way full but the toner
cartridge is empty. I do tell the printer that a new cartridge has
been installed but everytime when it is time to replace the cartridge
it still says it is half way full. Any suggestions would be
appreciated fixing this problem.
