have XP Home Ed. It crashed at boot up
with the error of

STOP 0x00000051 REGISTRY ERROR

pressed F8 after the BIOS screen at
boot and select "Last Known Good" configuration and see if you can boot
that.
But still same error

This indicates you have a corrupted registry - it could indicate the Registry received an I/O error while attempting to read one of its files as a result of a hardware problem or file system corruption.

If you can't restore to the last known good configuration or have a back up of your registry, then I'm afraid your looking at re-installing windows.....

the only option is to format the hard drive and re-install everything

I'm out of bed and dressed, what more do you want?

I always take life with a grain of salt, ... a slice of lemon, ...and a shot of tequila

I used to have an open mind but my brains kept falling out

One more step to enlightenment ... but which way ?

- If you have WinXP Home on a bootable CD...

- Pop the CD in the CD player, reboot the PC and enter your BIOS
- Find the "Boot sequence" or "Boot Options" area.. put CD-ROM 'head' of Hard Drive.. Doesn't really matter where the other ones are for right now.
- Make the change, save/boot
- When the WinXP installer comes up, just run a detect and repair
- If you have to re-install, that won't even be so bad as it should maintain most settings, and surely all software.

Non-Goo'gle..
