Help - lost dialup "disconnect" button - can't hang up modem without powering off the PC

I know this is probably my fault. We were trying to get an old DSL
modem working on this machine, it didn't work, we did tweak some of
the network settings but I thought I was being very careful not to do
anything that affected the dialup.

Dialup works fine but the disconnect button never appears in the
taskbar. I hit "exit" on the icon which shows the left/right moving
arrows, but that leaves the modem in command of the phone line.

I looked in Google and on the Microsoft KB thinking this was a common
problem with a known fix, now I'm getting a little concerned as
nothing showed up.
