sounds like it's chasing it's tale.
Press "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" and release. A window should pop-
up and show the programs running. It will likely
show "Not Responding" next the the culprit-tale-chaser
program. At the bottom of the window click "End Now".
That usually stops the tale chasing and allows you to
shut down normally. If that doesn't work, then the best
you can do is shut down improperly by pushing the On/Off
Button. (note: be sure to give the computer plenty of
time to respond to the "End Now"selection. It can take a
full minute to respond)
If you should need to turn the computer back on, allow
the hard drive to come to a complete stop (1-minute)
before pushing the On/Off button again.
