I have a Dell Dimension 8200 running IE8 with XP, SP3 , Windows
Firewall, Avira antivirus, Spybot (for updates only), Spywareblaster,
ATF and Hive Cleanup and all the programs work well together and are
up to date.

Tonight, I turned the power off too soon while the computer was still
powering down. I can still for the present at least logon to the
Internet; however each time I’ve done so Chkdsk pops up and starts to
scan the system. I cancel it and then it lets me in.

I’ve tried powering it off and back on and also selecting F8 and
trying the last settings that worked but it still does the same thing
and Chkdsk comes up. Is there a way to fix this so that my system is
back to normal or have I seriously damaged the HD beyond repair?

The hard drive has not been damaged but it is essential that you let chkdsk
run to completion
even if it takes several hours

The Command Prompt will appear and it will do the disk check when the
system is restarted. Or, even better, start the system to Safe Mode with
Command Prompt by pressing the F8 key prior to Windows loading -

Start --> run
type; CMD

Then type; net stop wuauserv { hit enter }

Then go to Windows Explorer and browse to; C:\WINDOWS
find the folder; SoftwareDistribution
rename the folder; SoftwareDistribution.bak

Then go bacj to the Comand Prompt window
type; CHKDSK C: /f { hit enter }

If it asks if the OS should run Check Disk and startup, choose Yes and then reboot.

NOTE: If Check Disk (CHKDSK) fails to complete and/or it continues to show up at every
boot then we are back at the subject of this thread "HD damage". The hard disk is failing
and will need to be replaced.

I've already try to let Chkdsk run and complete and it ran for 6 hours
and still hadn't completed 1 of 3. If its going to run, it shouldn't
take that long. It's in a loop.

Thanks,
Robert

I typed up to net stop wuauserv and it says:

system error 5 has occurred.

Access denied

C:\Documents and Settings\Rob>

Suggestions? Thoughts? Would a System Restore correct the problem?

Thanks,
Robert

Who is the hard disk manufacturer (IBM/Hitachi, SeaGate, Western Digital, etc.) of the
disk in your computer ?

Get the disk drive manufacturers hard drive test program and run that to test
the drive itself.
