Hello,

I have a 2 year old Compaq 5430US which I recently restored to its
original state when purchased. (i.e. reformatted and loaded the OS
plus selected Compaq software which came with the computer.)

While attempting to migrate files and settings from an older 400 mHz
computer I find there is no 'Use simple file sharing' selection
available in the Folder Options settings

(My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View > Files and Folders)

This newer P4 runs XP Home Edition. The older 400 mHz runs XP Pro.
Both these computers are set up on a LAN using a LinkSys router and I
AM able to access the Internet trough the router and a cable modem.

Do any of you know why the "simple file sharing" option is no longer
available?

Is there a way to have restore it without reinstalling the OS?

Thanks for any help you can provide.

That option does not exist in a WinXP Home system. If you need to access the
security tab, you will need to restart in Safe mode and logon as
administrator.

Thanks, Rick, for your response.

I probably posted my question much too soon and before I took ample
time to research on my own. I usually do try to research prior
newsgroup postings as well as performing knowledge base searches
BEFORE I post to a public forum. But this time I'm afraid the lateness
of the hour got the best of me.

I've had the worst time trying to migrate Outlook Express and Outlook
files and settings from various computers to others using the File and
Settings Transfer wizard. I was finally able to migrate OE settings
from this P4 on to a new computer I've recently built. But I found it
VERY difficult and quite frustrating. (Other files transferred easily
from one computer to the other - just by copying and pasting -- but OE
files and settings were another story altogether.) I was finally able
to succeed when I realized the 'Simple file sharing' setting on the
newly built computer was UNchecked.

When I had problems migrating Outlook files and settings from the
400mHz to the P4 Compaq, I thought my failure was due to the same
reason. When I found no 'simple file sharing' option listed on the XP
Home Edition I instantly assumed something had gone wrong with the
reformat and installation of XP Home and posted to this group without
exploring much further. Of course, I found AFTER I'd posted that XP
Home Edition does not have the option.

Thanks for taking the time to respond.
