Have to log off twice to shutdown

I had to rebuild my laptop about a month ago. Windows XP, SP3, all updates
in place. When I log off, the laptop appears to log off part way, to the
point of the Wireless Network Connection, then just sets there until I log
off again, then the laptop logs off, and I can shut down. Ctrl-Alt-Del shows
"no" processes running. Occasionally the laptop will log off on the first
try to the shut down screen. I can live with it but wonder if anyone has an
answer for my problem. Thank you.

Thanks Peter, however the hive cleanup utility did not seem to make any
change. Still have to log off twice. Re started the laptop several times, no
change.

Some software is not playing nice on your system. Look in the Processes
of Task Manager and compare which ones are running before the first
attempt to shut down as opposed to what is running the second time. Then
of the processes that are missing, try killing them one at a time and
then shutdown. When the shutdown works the first time, you have
identified the problem software.
